Prevention through ehealth App
There are a wide variety of Apps available for health. With most of the general population using their phones 24/7 increasingly interactively, an idea was hatched/born to increase awareness of dental health's importance. This App uses gamification to encourage the users to improve their scores to increase their dental health – whether they regularly visit the dentist or not. These animations explain how and why users keep their mouths clean and encourage and promote good habits by setting timely reminders.
While a website provides information about the business, an app focuses more on your patient or client.

COVID and Oral Health This recent article links Covid to Oral Health. It follows an earlier paper from Quatar. Follow Professor Iain Chapple for how Oral health is related to general health. Claude Hopkins did more for dental health prevention than any dentist. He was in advertising in the '30s, and he described the Habit Loop. He advertised removing "film" from teeth.
The fresh ring of confidence had no fluoride. Then, as now, the brush does all the work. He was selling fresh breath, not marketing health. |
There is more evidence linking Oral health directly to general health. Perhaps now, post Covid, the public is more aware of the long-term benefits of prevention. And a side effect is more socially acceptable smiles and fresh breath that are more of a hook for the general public.
The animations below were originally in the App to try and engage the public differently. The App videos are updated, and while the message is essentially the same, the video appearance may be better.

In 1982, we didn't have smartphones. We handed out OHI instruction leaflets. Then as now, we know that patients are not fully engaged with our OHI while in surgery. By customising your App, they can follow your advice at home with a follow-up email reminder and view your OHI in the bathroom on their phone. In ten years, their mirror may tell them they haven't used their interdental brushes in months. Until then, advise them on setting timely reminders on the App. The slideshow has a few screenshots from the App. Even better, download the teeth4life App now.

💡My lightbulb moment was after sending a periocourses YouTube video to an elderly patient.
The advantage of an App is it allows the user to personalise it and is a go-to resource for oral hygiene advice.

This is an excellent resource for the understanding and need for public intervention in reducing health inequality in the uk and worldwide. All evidence shows that water fluoridation reduces DMF rates in any area.
As for fluorosis, the history was only the childeren of DCPs may have suffered from it in the 70's when fluoride tablet supplements were available. For my experience is documented on the four minute video on Anglesey. As always, our health is ulimately financed by the government of the day. Successive governments have dodged the issue by passing the "authority or responsibility" to privatised water industries and as the video demonstrates, their main interest is that of the shareholders, not the public. |
