I retired from clinical dentistry on September 30 2019. Many of my friends have "given up" and retired with a decent pension. I retired out of frustration and to try to promote public prevention in oral health using the technology that wasn't around in 1982. While technology has made massive advances, human behaviour has not. In 1982, giving OHI in the dental chair was ineffective, and there was no point in starting treatment unless the oral hygiene was good. It's why I made my App. There is a traffic light system for the user to monitor their health and a reminder section on the phone to promote good habits.
The other quote is similar to what I heard over 30 years ago. You need to get in a helicopter to work on the business, not in it. I think there is a great future in providing care, having a good standard of living, and enjoying a career in dentistry. But it needs to change as the disparity between access and care is wider than ever, and we are all partly to blame. The links here are some other ideas and references that you may find of use.
