Innovative Dentistry with Silver Diamine Fluoride
Using Silver Diamine Fluoride, we now have the capability to address the disease process itself, rather than solely focusing on the removal of diseased and healthy tissue to make way for restorations. This approach exemplifies minimal invasive dentistry.
Key Benefits:
- **Minimally Invasive:**
Emphasises treatment of the disease rather than extensive tissue removal.
- **Advanced Materials:**
Along with improvements in speed and materials, there are now numerous options for restoring missing tooth tissue.
- **Superior Durability:**
Indirect 3 D printed Ceramic restorations may a longer lifespan , while being less technique-sensitive to direct aesthetic restorations and last as long as traditional dental amalgam.

As dental professionals, we have the opportunity to treat certain age groups in ways that alleviate discomfort and extend the life of their teeth long enough, or until they can afford more comprehensive treatment. However, it raises an important question about our society: why are we allowing vulnerable populations to suffer due to financial and regulatory constraints?
We need to reflect on the roles of those in leadership positions. In dentistry, we face challenges with the General Dental Council (GDC). It's critical to remember that organizations like the GDC exist to serve both the public and the profession. As highlighted in Dan Davies' book, *The Unaccountability Machine*, the GDC's lack of accountability and a clear regulatory framework can stifle innovation within our field. There is no level 4. It's time for a reassessment of priorities to better serve our community and foster advancements in dental care. Let’s work together toward a more supportive and effective system for everyone involved. Twelve seconds into this video is the part that needs research, meanwhile we have the evidence. Applying Silver Diamine Fluoride Around Contact Points
When addressing caries around contact points, it’s essential to approach the application of Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) with precision. The good news is that SDF only needs to be in contact with the affected area for just one minute to be effective. |
There are also short videos on the Hall technique and SMART dentistry on the website from a few years ago, as well as some updates on materials.

I joined this group earlier in the year, following the advice from a meeting on sustainable dentistry explaining as there was no money to fund teledentistry in the Uk, why didn't I do it. If I get permission I would add some of their content, and perhaps we could have an online course to help accelerate "green" dentistry that would benefit all levels of our society.
There are some shocking statistics, and excellent solutions hidden away.
They have trained nurses in A&E to apply SDF in some states, reducing childhood GA extractions by 85%.

Discover the American Mobile and Teledentistry Alliance
I discovered the American Mobile and Teledentistry Alliance through their podcast, and I found their enthusiastic presenters to be incredibly engaging on the topic of mobile dentistry. Although it has been a couple of years since they released a podcast, their content remains valuable and relevant. With minimal changes in the field of dentistry, many of their discussions continue to provide significant insights. I highly recommend giving their episodes a listen! |

Check out this fascinating presentation by Paul Glassman from last year, where he shares valuable experiences from the United States. He discusses the challenges of navigating regulations and the various stakeholders who could enhance access to dental care.
Glassman highlights that, much like in the UK, updating and changing legislation poses significant difficulties in certain states. His insights provide a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding access to dental services. |

This presentation provides a general overview of Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF), including references and detailed information about products from Elevate in the USA.
At approximately 38 minutes into the presentation, Sarah discusses the effects of SDF on gingival health. While there is minimal research available on this topic, the evidence supporting its positive impact is noteworthy. Many individuals may focus on the potential staining associated with SDF, overlooking the significant improvements in gingival health it can provide. |

Paul Glassman has dedicated his life to public health in California, and he shares his insights in a thought-provoking video available for free on YouTube made around Covid.
My own view is that future advancements in dentistry will largely hinge on our ability to influence human behaviour. We all have difficult-to-break habits, as well as the personal responsibility for our health. It's essential for us to provide one another with the right tools and information, and act accordingly. Now that is a challange 🤔 |
